Ask an Italian which are the best places to eat Italian in Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or surroundings. You will get as a standard answer that this is a ridiculous question. Nowhere of course you will find a pizza or pasta as tasty and good as in their hometown or anywhere else in Italy.
No chef can ever surpass their mama. Even not restaurants in Italy by the way. When we try to argue that there are so many people here with Italian ancestors, Italian family names, etc. we get a skeptical reply. And will not change the minds of ‘real’ Italians. But if you continue asking, they will admit there are are places that come very close to what they consider to be Italian cuisine. Here are some of them we like ourselves and that have the approval of our Italian friends.

Le Milazzo
One of our friends recommended us Le Milazzo in Eguilles. This is one of those places run by a couple with a real Italian family name (although their first names are French): Veronique and Albert Facciolo. the name Milazzo comes from a a small fisher’s town in the north of Sicily where the family originally hails from. Parking can be a problem in Eguilles, the small town on top of the hill to the west of Aix-en-Provence.
Since the official name is ‘Restaurant Italienne Pizzeria ‘Le Milazzo’ it will be no suprise that the menu consists for a large part of different types of pizzas. Quite unique is the fact that you can also get ‘cold pizzas’ (‘pizza salad’) here which is great on hot summer evenings. And yes, you will find us there regularly.
