Of course there are so many activities in or close to Aix-en-Provence | Marseille. Like going out to visit one of the nearly 900 (!) restaurants in or around Aix-en-Provence (see also on this website) or see the MUCEM and Vieux Port in Marseille. In this post we will focus on our absolute favourite things to do here.

Chateau Lacoste
We love going here with our visitors for lunch and a walk through a complete contemporary art (sculptures) exhibition with works from world renowned masters. After that we somehow always end up on the very pleasant terrace drinking the excellent Lacoste wine or in wine shop from the chateau buying it. Or both. The place has been transformed by the Irish owner, collectionneur and hotelier Paddy McKillen and has been opened to the public as from 2011.
U2’s Bono is said to be one of the co-investors in the Chateau. For a tast of their wine or a small bite the terrace next to the wine boutique is very pleasant. The Argentinian restaurant next to it must be great (famous Argentinian barbecue) but I am still trying to find a good reason to go there since it somewhat pricy. In the hotel (only accessible for hotel guests) there used to be a Michelin restaurant.
The artists and architects are invited by the domain and completely free to in creating their art works and they decide themselves where to place them. It also has a music pavilion (Frank Gehry), library, several restaurants and a five-star hotel.

Hiking along the Côte Blue coastline
A lesser-known paradise for tourists and sporty people.

Côte Bleue is the stretch of the southwestern coast of the Mediterranean Sea reaching from Marseilles to the Étang de Berre. A twenty minutes to half an hour drive from either Marseille or Aix-en-Provence. There are many hike trails which bring you past small calanques, villages and beaches. Also the area is great for other sports like, windsurfing, diving, cycling and jogging.

The coastline of the Côte Bleue also is full of remnants which date back to the 5th and 6th centuries B.C. and even to prehistorical times. In 1915 a train line between Miramas and Marseille was built which we took last year and is really with your while. we boarded in Istres and from there it is a very nice trip with beautiful views on the calanques and the Mediterranean Sea right into the centre of Marseille.
